In Lucknow, in Aminabad
Just as the sun sets
And the Maulvi completes the Azaan
Arrives a man pushing his cart
Through the crowded bylanes
Selling Nankhatais
The wafting smell of the shortbread
Pierce through the cacophony
And the bustle of the street
Where residents and visitors
Swarm to the shops
Buying an evening of fragrance, fashion and food
The man stands
Waiting with his hot baked Nankhatais
Eager to sell
So he can keep coming back to this lane
I enquire, how much
Gruffly he says 25 for 100 grams
Tired, knowing so many will
Haggle or turn away
I reach for the pocket
Find a hundred rupee note
And tell him ‘pack it’
I dig into the packet
And bite into the Nankhatai
As the man gives me a toothy grin
Revealing a story
Many of us have forgotten
In our daily rush.
I thought it would be a toothless grin … the nankhatais are so soft and they melt in the mouth

Thanks for that. Maybe, I can change it in the print version.
